I’ve never been good at treating Charlene right on her birthday but this year I was finally on top of it – or so I thought. The kids and I had even bought her gifts a full day before her birthday! I’m not known for early shopping. Then on the big day, while she was at school, we planned and prepared just what she wanted for supper, along with homemade birthday cake and cards. It was going to be GREAT! There were however a few problems. I remembered at 3:30, I had forgotten to take the hamburger out of the freezer. We added twice the baking powder needed to the cake recipe. Then being a little overwhelmed and unfamiliar with cooking duties, we baked a 3 layer cake without grease or flour in the pan. Needless to say, the cake had to be scraped out of the pans. It definitely gave new meaning to the words “dump cake.”
Well, Charlene thought this was the best birthday of all time. The kids and I had fun and Charlene felt loved. I guess you don’t have to be perfect for things to turn out good.
